The Physics of Freight Pricing
Freight forwarders and carriers use Volumetric Weight (also known as Dimensional Weight) to account for the space cargo occupies. A large box of feathers takes up more room in an aircraft than a small box of lead, even if the lead weighs more.
The Calculation Flow:
- Cubic Volume: Length × Width × Height per piece.
- CBM Conversion: Converting CM to Cubic Meters (CBM).
- Factor Application: Multiplying CBM by the freight-specific ratio (e.g., 167 for Air).
- Weight Comparison: Comparing Volumetric Weight against Actual Gross Weight.
The Chargeable Weight is always the greater of the two values. This ensures carriers are fairly compensated for both the weight capacity and the volume capacity of their transport assets.
