Why UN/LOCODE Matters
The United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations (UN/LOCODE) is a global geographical standard managed by UNECE. It is used to identify locations involved in international tradeports, airports, inland clearing depots, and freight terminalsensuring that data exchange across borders remains error-free.
Code Structure:
[ISO Country Code (2 letters)] [Location Identifier (3 letters)]
Example: AE DXB (Dubai, UAE) or NL RTM (Rotterdam, Netherlands). Using these standardized codes on shipping instructions, electronic manifests, and bank documents prevents port-of-destination errors and facilitates smoother customs clearance globally.
