The Economics of THC

Terminal Handling Charges (THC) are fees collected by terminal operators for the services provided within the port area, specifically for the transfer of containers between the vessel and the yard. These charges are a significant component of local logistics costs at both origin and destination.

Why THC Rates Vary:

  • Labor intensity: Ports in high-income regions (Europe/Americas) typically have 3x higher THC than developing trade hubs.
  • Special Handling: Refrigerated (Reefer) containers attract higher THC due to power monitoring and plug-in services.

For Incoterms like CIF or CFR, the origin THC is usually prepaid as part of the ocean freight, while the destination THC is paid by the consignee. Professional freight auditing involves verifying these local terminal tariffs against carrier invoices to prevent overbilling.
