Navigating Terminal Storage

Port Storage (often categorized under Port Demurrage) is the charge levied by the terminal operator for the use of ground space. Unlike line demurrage (paid to the shipowner), storage is paid to the port authority to ensure high turnover of terminal assets.

The Slab-Rate Impact:

  • Progressive Pricing: Most global ports double the daily rate every 5-7 days of continued storage.
  • Notice of Readiness (NOR): Free time usually begins the moment the vessel is berthed or the container is discharged.
  • Hazardous Cargo: DG (Dangerous Goods) often have zero free days and significantly higher daily multipliers.
