Managing Terminal Dwell Time

Dwell Time is the period a container stays at a port or inland container depot (ICD) between its arrival and pick-up. In global logistics, dwell time is a critical KPI for supply chain efficiency. Longer resident times often lead to port congestion and increased overheads for shippers.

Storage vs. Demurrage:

  • Terminal Storage: Charged by the port authority for using their ground space.
  • Line Demurrage: Paid to the shipping line for the use of the actual container box.

High dwell times can be caused by various bottlenecks, including customs delays, transport unavailability, or document processing issues. Monitoring dwell time helps logistics managers negotiate better free-time terms and optimize their drayage operations.
