How Container Tracking Works

In global trade, tracking is accomplished through EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) and API integrations with shipping lines. Every time a container moveswhether it's "Gated In" at a terminal, "Loaded" onto a vessel, or "Discharged" at a transhipment huba status event is generated.

Common Tracking Identifiers:

  • BIC Container Number: A unique 4-letter + 7-digit code (e.g., MEDU1234567).
  • Bill of Lading (B/L): The official contract of carriage issued by the carrier.
  • Booking Reference: The initial reservation number for the shipment space.

Accurate tracking allows importers to plan their warehouse labor, transportation, and cash flow by knowing exactly when cargo will hit the destination port and clear customs.
