The Benchmark of Port Efficiency

In global container terminal operations, Berth Productivity is the single most critical KPI. It determines how quickly a vesselcarrying thousands of containerscan be serviced and released. High productivity directly translates to lower operational costs for shipping lines and higher throughput for the port infrastructure.

Core Terminal KPIs:

  • Crane Intensity: This refers to the number of Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes assigned to a single vessel. For Mega-ULCVs (Ultra Large Container Vessels), an intensity of 6-8 cranes is common to maintain schedules.
  • Gross Crane MPH: The number of moves divided by the total time a crane is active. World-class terminal automated systems aim for 30-35 MPH consistently.

Reducing alongside time by even 10% can save a carrier tens of thousands of dollars in fuel (by allowing for "Slow Steaming" to the next port) and berth occupancy fees. Terminal planners use this tool to optimize berth allocation windows and labor shifts across the quay.
