20' Open Top Container

Specialized equipment for over-height and top-loaded industrial cargo.

What is a 20' Open Top Container?

The 20-foot Open Top (20OT) container is a specialized unit designed for heavy or bulky cargo that cannot be loaded through standard end doors. Instead of a solid steel roof, it features a removable tarpaulin (or "rag-top") supported by movable roof bows. This allows for top-loading by crane, making it essential for shipping heavy machinery, large glass panels, industrial engines, or bulky timber.

A key structural advantage of the 20OT is its tiltable door header, which can be swung out of the way to facilitate the entry of over-height items through the door if necessary. Once loaded, the tarpaulin is secured with TIR-approved cables to provide weather protection similar to a dry van. While these units carry a premium in freight cost due to their specialized nature and the extra handling required, they are the only viable option for many types of project cargo and and industrial oversized loads.
